On the Razing of Sandy Hook Elementary School by Cathy Chandler

“Back out of all this now too much for us.”– Robert Frost, from “Directive” (Steeple Bush, 1947)

It was a school. It is a school no more.
            Weep, for
the echoes won’t be stilled. A small boy brings
            what little things
he thinks could make his neighbor feel less sad,
            could make her glad –
a teddy bear. She notes his iron-clad
innocence. She notes his baby teeth.
Don’t look for footprints. Do not lay a wreath.
Weep for what little things could make them glad.

Catherine Chandler’s second full-length collection, Glad and Sorry Seasons, will be available as of March 17, 2014. Publisher: Biblioasis Press (Windsor, Ontario). It is currently available for pre-order on Amazon.com.
